Yes. I admit it. I have been watching Pharrell Williams’ 24-hour video of his Academy Award nominated song “Happy.” It’s a joy to see so many different people in so many different places dancing in their own way. See…the world CAN be happy. At least for the length of a song.
And when did we start realizing that happiness is something to be cherished? Probably when the first human looked at the second human and saw himself in the other. Because, in my opinion, that’s what true happiness is – knowing you are not alone.
There is a definition of the word, of course. “Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy”. That’s from wikipedia.com There are so many ways to say it: Glad, delighted, pleased. all synonyms of that joyous feeling that really, in all honesty, is indescribable. I feel jubilant! I feel wonderful! I feel alive!
It seems strange to me that there has been research done to determine what makes people happy. Some of the concepts being explored are well-being, quality of life, and flourishing. Multi-choice tests are created to figure out when you’re happiest. Reports are written on the state of happiness of entire countries. In fact, there are hundreds of tests, reports, evaluations, experiments, all trying to find out what makes us happy. But, as of yet, no method has been found to improve long-term happiness.
I rather doubt that “they” will ever find a distinct meaning of the word. Everyone is happy in their own way. And that’s okay. Take a moment and imagine what the world would be like if we were all the same…
….sigh.
So what makes you happy?
